Secrets of the Soul by Sendy Brown

Spellbound is how audiences frequently find themselves at some point during a Sendy Brown performance. Sendy doesn't just sing; she creates. Carefully staying true to the lyric, she moves souls with her passionate interpretations. Sendy is serious about her craft and her debut CD, Secrets of the Soul, showcases her exceptional talent and her commitment to the art.

Secrets of the Soul is a fulfillment long-awaited. A pastor's daughter, Sendy's voice always impressed the congregation in Jersey City, NJ. At age 11, she 'packed the house' at a concert she gave at church. Later, she even impressed legendary vocalist, Betty Carter. At a workshop while attending Howard University's school of Fine Arts in Washington, DC, she sang a question to the Jazz Great. The audience exploded with applause and Ms. Carter answered in song, 'You just did it! You just did it!' and complimented Sendy on her voice.

After graduating from Howard, where she studied with Grady Tate and Kehembe Eichelberger, she began performing in DC's local venues like BET on Jazz Restaurant and The Islander Restaurant. To ensure that she stayed close to both her family and her music, she founded a company, Music For Children, to teach music in childcare centers, schools, and summer camps. Between teaching and parenting, Sendy found time to assemble her best accompanists and take the act to the studio.

Secrets of the Soul, is the culmination of her work. It is a strong statement and an exceptional display. A work of art from beginning to end, the listener is taken on a sonic journey and presented with a range of emotions. With updated renditions of Jazz classics, like 'Round Midnight, Skylark, and When I Fall in Love, this recording will please a range of listeners. Jazz enthusiasts will love the scope of the CD (it features ballads, Blues, and swinging up-tempo tunes) as well as the range of her voice, her careful interpretation of the lyric, her phrasing and her respect for the tradition. Fans of Good Music will love the refreshing arrangements and unique approaches heard in Angel Eyes and In a Sentimental Mood. All will enjoy her voice, the feel, and the commitment that underscores the entire work.
