Hinges by Shutz Vtet

Kalia Vandever, trombonist, only a junior in high school, is known for her sparkling tone and her ever-flowing joy. Kalia has garnered recognition from her native home, Orange County, California, to Port Townsend, Washington, where she has attended the Centrum Jazz Workshop, on scholarship, for two years running.

Kyle Poole, percussionist, is a recent LACHSA graduate. He is a man of many talents. His musical eyes are undoubtedly looking forward, into current and future endeavors. His combination of a powerful intrinsic musicality, monstrous technique, and a fierce creative spirit is propelling him forward into the jazz world. Kyle attends the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, on full scholarship.

Adrian Cota, a recent emigrant from Sinaloa, Mexico, fills the percussion role of the Shutz Vtet during Kyle's east-coasted absence. A dynamic, genre-bending drummer, Adrian is only fifteen – a sophomore in high school. An amazingly quick study with a flair for subdivision, the young musician attended the Berklee College of Music's five-week summer program and plays in LACHSA's top group, which he joined upon arrival to the school. Adrian performed as part of the Shutz Vtet in their victorious set at the Angel City Competition this September (2011).

Jacob Shulman, tenor saxophonist, serves as the middle harmonic voice for the group, half of its namesake, and its primary composer. Jacob's tendencies towards oft-forgotten nuance and scientific, logical music have earned him a unique approach to both writing and improvising. He has been recognized by the Stanford Jazz Workshop, Centrum at Port Townsend, Berklee College of Music, and by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz as a torch-holder for a new wave of young musicians. Jacob is a LACHSA 12th grader.

Sarah Kuo, bassist, maneuvers complexly braided time signatures, horrifying harmonic progressions, and cheetah-reminiscent tempos without breaking a string, a finger, or a sweat. Originally trained as a classical bassist, Sarah dove into jazz and improvised music her first year in high school, which led her to LACHSA's top combo, with whom she has practiced, performed, and toured throughout 2011.

Jasper Dutz, alto saxophonist, is the Vtet's soaring soprano voice, and he also writes for the group. Jasper is incessantly original, and can be recognized by humongous intervallic crevasses and an unorthodox approach to saxophonic improvisation. He has received numerous accolades and awards from across the country, from Boston to Monterey to Indiana, including the #1 position at The Spotlight Awards at the Los Angeles Music Center. He has returned LACHSA for his final year of attendance.
